School dinners in England are dominated by grab-and-go foods, finds Jamie Oliver-backed study
Pupils in England are routinely eating pizza slices, sausage rolls and paninis for lunch as a 'grab-and-go' culture of unhealthy food is the norm in school canteens.
Convenience foods eaten on the move are reigning over sit-down meals and are the main way secondary pupils in England refuel during lunch breaks, a report backed by the TV chef Jamie Oliver has found.
Food campaigners fear the trend may worsen childhood obesity, leave pupils struggling to concentrate in classrooms and undermine the government’s pledge to raise the healthiest generation of children ever.
Bite Back found that 60% of pupils buy eat on the go options at lunchtime at least once per week, while 40% do this three, four or five times each week and 32% consume these items at morning break.
