Six top-brand baby food pouches found to lack key nutrients

A laboratory approved by the UK Accreditation Service was commissioned by Panorama to independently test the nutritional value of a fruit, yoghurt and savoury pouches from each of the six leading brands (Ella's Kitchen, Heinz, Piccolo, Little Freddie, Aldi and Lidl).

The investigation found:

  • savoury pouches containing less than 5% of the key nutrient, iron, that an infant needs per day;

  • a fruit pouch in which virtually all the vitamin C had been lost during the manufacturing process;

  • fruit pouches marketed as having 'no added sugar' containing about four teaspoons of so-called 'free sugars' - which experts say is "intentionally misleading";

  • pouches being marketed to babies as young as four months old, against the recommendations of the UK government and the World Health Organisation (WHO).
