The Food Foundation and First Steps Nutrition Trust publish joint policy briefing on the Healthy Start scheme

On the 2nd May, the Food Foundation and First Steps Nutrition Trust published a joint policy briefing on the Healthy Start scheme (the scheme which supports families on very low incomes to purchase milk and vegetables in pregnancy and in the early years - up to age four).

The briefing covers why the scheme is needed; covering the increase in food insecurity, the impact on health outcomes and health inequalities, and the cost of food and formula. It also recommends government action in the following areas:

  1. Increase the value of the Healthy Start allowance

  2. Expand eligibility of Healthy Start

  3. Ensure no eligible family misses out, including but not limited to auto enrolment

  4. Supporting the scheme to meet its nutrition objectives by giving further information and support and making the Healthy Start Vitamins available to all families.

The report can be used in further advocacy work and you can read the full report on the Food Foundation website.
